Eight leading Scottish writers have contributed stories to the first ever Anthology of Scottish Football Fiction, called The Hope That Kills Us. Critically acclaimed writers, Alan Spence, Des Dillon, Denise Mina, Laura Hird, Gordon Legge, Linda Cracknell, Alan Bissett and Suhayl Saadi have all been specially commissioned to provide short stories on football and Scotland, its impact on individuals, our national identity and culture.

The project includes stories from five writers from across Scotland previously unpublished in a major collection. These writers were identified through a series of national writing workshops, in places as diverse as Easterhouse, Her Majesty’s Prison Glenochil, Perth and several universities in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Hope That Kills Us also features a substantial photo-essay by award-winning New York photographer, Paul Thorburn, originally from Bishopton near Glasgow. Over 100 pages of photography are included, covering portraits of fans from each SPL club, five-a-side players and sixteen ex-internationals, alongside ‘behind the scenes’ action from one game in each senior league and landscapes from Scotland’s most endangered footballing species, the public pitch.
