The number of artists featured now totals well over one thousand and, significantly, artists born 1900-1950 are included for the first time.
The area has produced a rich clutch of artists of national significance, like Thomas Bewick, John Graham Lough, John Martin, Myles Birket Foster, Clarkson Stanfield. T.M. Richardson, Charles Naiper Hemy and 'Glasgow Boy' Joseph Crawhall, along with the Cullercoats colony of artists, whose national importance is only now coming to be fully recognised.
