Press comment on Tom Sheppard's earlier books on operation of four wheel drive vehicles THE LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE Editions 1 and 2:
"His writing is superb. The most complex subjects are explained with striking clarity and simplicity supported with summary side notes and ... hundreds of attractive drawings and pictures. Most surprising is the quality of the excellent all-colour photography, which combines high information content with stunning locations and artistic merit." -- Daily Telegraph, UK
This book started as a commission from Land Rover to 'do a little booklet on expeditions'. We had the idea of basing it around the Royal Geographical Society notes Tom Sheppard had done earlier - these in turn drawing on his extensive expedition experience and in particular the first west-east crossing of the Sahara for which he gained the Royal Geographical Society's prestigious Ness Award. It soon became clear the project was going to be a monster and Tom's characteristic thoroughness and grasp of detail were between them making time scales hard to predict. In the middle of it all Land Rover's increasingly complex involvement with BMW put their mind on other things. To preserve the value of the work done and to ensure survival of the project, Desert Winds Publishing was formed. The book would be published and printed by Desert Winds and then sold to Land Rover. Through several knife-edge situations the project survived. We determined to make it a top quality product - another of Tom Sheppard's obsessions - yet, with a view to the very special buying public for this material, vowed to keep the price below #30. A 550 page full colour hardback on good paper is not easy to do for that price and only the small size and lean format of Desert Winds enabled the goals to be met. We had no idea at the start that it would reach 550 pages - or take three years' research to complete! Looking back, and looking at what resulted, we have no regrets about either figure. Many well-earned acknowledgements appear in the book where outside advice was sought, considered and incorporated but we'd like to repeat here our gratitude to all those who helped. And that includes Butler and Tanner Ltd in Frome, whose printing and binding make a substantial contribution to a book of which we are quietly proud.
