From the Author

As interest in John Clare increases, so scholarly and critical work has expanded enormously in eth last decade. The 12 new critical essays in this collection show some of the exciting new directions in which Clare studies have been developing. Moving away from the old idea of Clare as a tragically isolated victim, several critics look at the often ingenious ways that Clare devised to create literary communities - imagined and real - in which to situate his poetry. There is a marked interest in how Clare was, and is, presented to the world: through biography and autobiography, through the 'spin' by which he was presented as a 'peasant poet' in the 1820s, and through modern methods of editing and presentation. His relationships to both Romanticism and to the 'self-taught' peasant poet tradition are examined. Two of the most important areas of Clare?s mature work, the Midsummer Cushion project and the Byron poems of 1841, are given fresh critical attention. Many of eth contributors are new scholars, and their work is set alongside new material from senior scholars such as Jonathan Bate, Richard Cronin and P.M.S. Dawson.
