This series of reference works for Haydn scholars and enthusiasts was relaunched in 1992 with "Volume XVII". Following the publication of the original libretti of "La canterina" and "Le pescatrici" in "Volume XX" and "Lo speziale" in Volume XXI", the present edition continues the series by reproducing those of "La Circe" (Eszterhaza, 1789) and "Philemon and Baucis" (Eszterhaza, 1773). Complementary articles and "Haydn News" are included, as well as a recently discovered piece of anonymous ballet music, performed in Paris during the French revolution, containing music by Haydn. The various explanations for how Haydn could have become involved with this project are discussed here by H.C. Robbins Landon. A newly discovered letter from Haydn's pupil John Wall Callcott to Samuel Arnold (1795) is also reproduced in facsimile.
