Synopsis:

This is a book devoted to the sequencing of classical music. Since all styles of music are constructed of the same basic components, we have no difficulty crossing what has often been a cultural divide between the opera house and the recording studio. As in our previous book - Music in Sequence - out aim has not been to present yet another technical manual but to explain how to interpret music using technology creatively. For this reason the book is not linked to one software publisher or operating system, but should suit all mainstream sequencing work. We hope you enjoy it. Technically, a sequence has always meant a series of events that follow each other in order. The term sequencer was first coined in the early seventies when the burgeoning electronics industry produced a device that was capable of storing sufficient data to enable a handful of notes to be repeated automatically. The increasing popularity of sequencers also brought with it problems, as it was only in 1983 that a group of manufacturers established the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) for connecting technology such as sequencers and synths together.

Sequencers developed rapidly from their humble origins and can now store and manipulate with ease the mass of data needed for long and complex compositions. Combined with a modern synth producing sounds of almost infinite subtlety it is now possible for the single musician to create & control every aspect of a full ensemble piece in almost any musical style. During the period that this book has been in print, the screen styles and methods of sequencers have remained similar - with Cubase one of the better known pieces of software on the market, but a large proportion of people finding cheaper or free variations on the theme. We have chosen music which, while possibly being familiar, is not always easy to obtain in printed form. We do not claim the pieces to be uniquely representative of the work of their composers or periods as they have been chosen primarily for their suitability for sequencing.

The sophistication of the modern sequencer is not limitless, though and the regular rhythms of the dance have a prominent place here, while the elegant phrasing of classical music, the fleeting nuances of romantic music and the exciting complexities of modern scores may appear to rarely for some tastes - although later chapters deal with some of these challenges.
