Playsongs came out of the baby music groups which I used to run when my children were babies themselves. I wanted to share songs and rhymes with my babies and through the groups I discovered that other parents and carers very much wanted to share them too. I discovered that singing with my baby wasn't just about lullabies or nursery rhymes: there was a whole wealth of interactive games you could play, with sounds to explore and language to develop together. Watching other parents and babies in the groups showed me that we all benefit from engaging in musical play with our children - it helps us communicate with the very youngest child and through mutual enjoyment of the games we can play together right from the start we gain a very special closeness. And besides the fun, these songs got me through some of the hardest times of early child rearing - those crying nights when singing the same little song over and over was the only consolation for a distraught baby,!
and one which consoled me too. The games taught me ways to engage my baby at all kinds of difficult times - and they never failed.
I compiled Playsongs from the favourites I put together for the groups - everything tried and tested by hundreds of babies and toddlers. I'm indebted to Sandra and Leon, the musicians who so beautifully - but accessibly - perform them on the CD. But these songs and rhymes are at their best when you sing them yourself - and it wont be long before baby joins in too.
