Synopsis:
150 years ago the British Museum opened to the public an exhibition of a collection of marbles assembled in Asia Minor by Charles Fellows and brought to England at the expense of the Government. They were popularly called the "Xanthian Marbles", although they came from various places besides the ancient capital of Lycia. This is the story of how, when and why these Graeco-Persian sculptures of the 5th century BC were acquired for the nation. Readers journey with Fellows and learn of the day-to-day problems of a traveller in those far-off times; take part in the excitement of his discoveries and follow the events that led to the dispatch of two expeditions to Xanthus; join the work-force at the excavations and at leisure; and see all of this through the many sketches of Fellows himself and his artist, George Scharf junior, who later became the founding Director of the National Portrait Gallery.
