In comparison with low-ground sites, there have been very few observations on the mountains of Scotland, largely because of the remoteness of the sites from human habitation and the difficulties involved in using standard observing instruments, which rapidly become iced-up and useless. One notable exception is provided by the unit which operated on the summit of Ben Nevis from 1883 to 1904.
