For many years Charles Hadfield had been puzzled by the fact that Telford's autobiography makes scant reference to William Jessop, even though Jessop had been Telford's senior engineer on both the Ellesmere Canal and the Caledonian Canal. Hadfield therefore embarked on a careful study of all the surviving evidence and was intrigued to discover that not only had Jessop's personal papers never been made public, but that all the official letters Jessop ever wrote to Telford about the Ellesmere Canal (and its Pontcysyllte Aqueduct) and the Caledonian, had completely vanished from official records. The author asks why Telford's autobiography was so inaccurate and unfolds a tale of detection, offering his evidence on the subject.
