St Paul's Cathedral has been the centre of religious life in London for more than 1500 years and the scene of great events from Royal marriages to the funerals of national heroes like Nelson and Wellington. The surrounding area is full of names steeped in history - Blackfriars, Whitefriars and Ludgate Hill. The street names reflect the products that were sold there: Honey Lane, Milk Street and Ironmonger Lane. Many of the old craft guilds have their headquarters nearby. Today the area around St Paul's and Cheapside is thronged with traffic, tourists, traders and workers, much as it has been throughout its history.
