First published in 1883 under the title "Greater London", and written by a Victorian historian and antiquarian, this work records the history of the hamlets, villages and market towns that made up the metropolitan area before the urban sprawl took over. Part 1 is mainly concerned with Middlesex. The amount of interest in London's history has increased over the years, and now when there is little to differentiate between one district and another, the interest in local history has never been greater or more widespread. The history of some London villages stretches back to Roman or Saxon times. Many grew up around coaching inns, river fords and Royal palaces. The battlefields, historical characters and palaces of Greater London's past are all covered, and the author aims to recreate the atmosphere of the old villages, their inns and churches, and the pastimes and pleasures of ordinary people as well as the rich and famous.
