The history of shipbuilding in Derry
Gerald Hasson's thoroughly researched account of the city's dockyard history takes the reader on a grand tour through the successes and failures of the men who strove to make Derry a major force in the maritime world. Along the way we encounter the innovative genius of William Coppin, whose showpiece Great Northern, launched in 1842, was the largest ship of its kind in the world at the time. We are also introduced to the local shipowners and merchants who plied their trade on the British and North Atlantic routes. Regrettably, the master shipbuilders who were instrumental in putting Derry on the industrial map are now largely forgotten, as is the industry they nurtured and developed and the thousands of workers it employed. Thunder and Clatter is a testament to their remarkable and hard earned achievements.
