Though best known as the author of two of the earliest Beat novels (Who Walk in Darkness and The Bold Saboteurs), Chandler Brossard (1922-93) displayed his exuberant imagination best in the shorter works he wrote during the second half of his life, all of which are collected here. Ranging from a surrealistic anti-Vietnam War novella to a folksy walking tour of a Kafkaesque Amerika, these seven works form a perfect introduction to one of the most daring writers of postwar America.

During the second half of his prolific writing career, Chandler Brossard (1922-1993) turned to small presses in the US and Europe to pursue his increasingly radical vision of imaginative fiction. The Unknown Chandler Brossard collects for the first time all of Brossard's rare chapbooks and novellas from the period 1971-1987 and also presents two previously unpublished works. These nearly unclassifiable works range from ribald retellings of classic fairy tales to a searing indictment of the war in Vietnam; from folksy "Postcards" from such places as "If Looks Could Kill, South Carolina," to postmodern psalms. Critic and Brossard scholar Steven Moore has contributed an introduction that provides the context for these previously uncollected works, aligning Brossard with counterculture groups such as Situationist International and Monty Python's Flying Circus. Long considered an important figure of the Beat generation owing to his experimental 1950s novels Who Walk In Darkness and The Bold Saboteurs, this omnibus confirms that Chandler Brossard remained a literary innovator of unquenchable imagination until his death in 1993.
