Synopsis
This is primarily a photographic book based on months of virtually unrestricted travel throughout Vietnam by the publisher of "American Geographic". It is a statement about the new Vietnam, free of the bitterness of the Vietnamese conflict. It portrays a beautiful landscape and a country in transition from wartime zeal to participation in the world community. But mostly it shows the people whose ethnic variety and differences are often surprising to Americans raised on war-time information. Captured here are the hustle of the streets in Ho Chi Minh City, the stern face of Hanoi and the north, the seemingly pastoral agricultural countryside, the Mekong Delta, the jungles, the mountain people and the middle coast. Chapters are devoted to geography of the country, a guide to visiting Vietnam with all the necessary information for in-country use, a description of the author's journeys to this Indo-Chinese nation and a brief introduction to the language and numbering system.
