From the Author:
I write in order to learn how to love.
Details of Flesh is a collection of poetry that looks at how we care for one another or fail to care for one another. In many poems I present my experiences as a nurse--moments of suffering, of life and death--always utilizing the image of the nurse as metaphor, the one who comes uncalled to the bedside. In other poems, I examine relationships between parent and child, between lovers, between enemies and friends. The undercurrent of my work is always that subconscious and archtypical sense of the strangeness and fragility of life--how necessary it is that we humans cling to one another with love and purpose. Nursing becomes a perfect way to write about this strange fragility. In the sick patient, I see death's threat, fear, and vulnerability. In the image of the nurse, I see the power to heal, the power to save, but most of all, the power to love selflessly. As a poet and a nurse, I keep death away not with medicine, but with memory. My work, however, is not for the faint of heart. I try to approach my subjects straight on, with eyes wide open and all senses praising reality, imparting a sense of integrity and honesty to the poems. Like most poets, I write utilizing the moments of my life, then I seek the metaphor within that experience. As a nurse at the front lines of healthcare, I've been blessed with a life that is intense, visceral, and filled with grace. I hope you enjoy my book. Please know that it was written with love and hope.
