Voices of Rondo: Oral Histories of Saint Paul’s Historic Black Community includes thirty-three individual short stories that share the varied aspects of the Black culture in this dynamic, diverse community. Voices of Rondo encapsulates the experience of Blacks living in northern cities throughout the United States. These stories celebrate the community and the culture of those who lived and worked in the vibrant Rondo neighborhood during the first half of the Twentieth Century. We glimpse the challenges of racism and poverty, and share the victories of a community that educated its children to become strong, to find personal pride, and to become the next generation of leaders in Saint Paul and beyond.

Review:

"Reflections from this rich variety of persons whose lives were a part and parcel of that once vibrant community make for a compellingly grand and informative narrative."--Mahmoud El-Kati, Macalester College

"I truly enjoyed reading the stories of this distinguished group of African Americans, many of whom I have come to know quite well. Through their voices, I now have a much deeper understanding of the community that nurtured their talents."--Dr. Patricia A. Harvey, former Superintendent of Saint Paul Public Schools

About the Author:
KATE CAVETT grew up in Minnesota listening to her father’s stories about his childhood in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma and the Italian Campaign of World War II. She has collected oral histories from over 150 people of all backgrounds, ages, races, and professions, from police officers to gang members. She has had the opportunity to spend hundreds of hours listening to their reflections on parenting, careers, neighborhoods, and their sorrows, passions, racism, fears, and joys. Ms. Cavett is the award-winning consulting producer of Oh Freedom Over Me, a radio documentary about the history of Mississippi Freedom Summer 1964. She has a B.A. in counseling and an M.A. in human development. When not listening to people’s stories, Kate finds joy in her creative and intelligent son, theater, art, jazz, and walking her Yorkie.
