This is an autobiographical account of Melville's six years in Guatemala as a Roman Catholic missionary priest. His encounters with the violence of the poor and the wealthy, oppressive institutions, and peasant belief in ghosts shattered his own beliefs and led him to a more personal faith. As a result of this transformation he was excommunicated, and subsequently beaten and left without money in Mexico. The account is fast-paced and suspenseful, troubling yet inspiring. Recommended for public libraries.
