The product of years of research by a quartet of authors, Texas Burial Sites of Civil War Notables features more than 600 of the most "notable" Civil War era leaders who are buried in Texas. The men and women covered, both Unionists and Confederates, include politicians, generals, naval officers, authors and civilians. A biography is given for each individual, along with directions to where he or she is buried. It is lavishly illustrated with superb photos of the tombstones and gravesites. Sam Houston opposed secession and, as governor, did more than any other public official in the South to keep his state in the Union. Despite his opposition, Texas seceded, and the secessionists forced him out of office. Texas hero Dick Dowling, a Houston saloonkeeper of Irish birth, won fame for his defense of Sabine Pass. Lieutenant Dowling and his 43 men repulsed a major Union invasion of Texas, in a battle often referred to as the "Thermopylae of the Civil War." Confederate President Jefferson Davis honored Dowling and his men with the only official medal for valor awarded by the Confederacy during the war.
