Introduction. As this book goes to press the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Services reaches the mature age of 80 years. On 3 August 1905 instructions went out from the Admiralty that their auxiliary vessels should henceforth be known as "Royal Fleet Auxiliaries". Subsequently the Service was given its own flag - the Blue Ensign defaced in the fly by a vertical gold anchor. An Order in Council of 1911 firmly placed the RFA, within the area of commercial shipping by providing for its ships to be registered under the Merchant Shipping Acts. In 1985 however plans were announced to deregister the Fleet due to its increasing "front line" military role. Today the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service is operated by the Director of Supplies and Transport (Ships and Fuel) whose directorate forms part of the Royal Naval Supply and Transport Service (RNSTS) within the Ministry of Defence (Navy). In overall charge is the Director General of Supplies and Transport, a civil servant who, himself, reports to the Chief of Fleet Support, an Admiralty Board Member. All RFA's are manned by Merchant Navy personnel, which has the advantage of making their presence acceptable in neutral ports in time of war or where delicate international relations exist. With fuel and stores supplied afloat by the RFA fleet the Royal Navy no longer has to depend on overseas bases (which in any event are no longer available) and is given the facility of world wide freedom of movement. The seminal year of 1905 has been taken as the starting point of this book, in that only those RFA's built on or after that date have been included. A few anomalies unfortunately result in the cases of those vessels constructed prior to this but not taken up for RFA service until 1905. Pennant Numbers were not allocated to all ships but have been included when numbers were issued.
