In it are about every authentic thing that Burns ever wrote, from witty or scathing remarks on politics, to thank you notes to benefactors, and much much more. Those writings include a brilliant series of poems, mostly in his native Scots or "Doric" dialect and including the devilishly difficult Makar verse form so hard to compose. They also include his many songs composed specifically to honour and preserve his native folk-music genre which was becoming extinct due to the systematic oppression/repression of "things Scottish" by the English since the last Stuart War in 1745: he kept two publishers busy publishing his songs and refused to accept any payment although he was hardly more than a famous pauper at the time. His feverish intellect (and probable manic depression self-treated with alcohol) literally made being Scottish and all things Scottish the toast of intelligentsia and commoner alike. In a mere ten years - he died at 37 of complications of hard work, a dental procedure and too much drink - he saved the Scots and started a revolution in modern thought.
