Fifty French Paintings on Display at the Gallery, Reproduced in Colour. When the National Gallery of Ireland first opened to the public in January 1864 the collection on view numbered one hundred and thirty-eight paintings. Of these only nine were French and two of them by Poussin and Vernet, were not part of the the Gallery's collection but on loan from the National Gallery, London. Of the remaining seven there was a studio work by Vernet, a painting of Cupid Chastised attributed to Prud'hon (but now known to be by the German eighteenth century painter, Ignaz Stern) and a portrait of the Irish writer and socoalite, Lady Morgan by the nineteenth century painter, Rene Berthon. Four very large French paintings dominated the new galleries on that opening day and these four pictures, all featured in this book, formed the basis of the Gallery's French collection which now numbers about one hundred and fifty paintings.
