At the age of 36, after a short, brilliant career, he joined the distinquished company of artists and scholars who have gone hopelessly insane.As a young man he made his mark in Literary, His first book was Ancient Crosses of West Cornwall, publishedwhen he was 21. but hewanted greater things, and worked hard to be an artist, but the pressure , with no advantages of birth or money, sensitive and shy and unstable in temperment led to a nervous breakdown, he continues to work until the onset of madness, he lost all coherence and became a raving lunatic and was sent to Bodmin Asylum, There as a final indignity, his funds were inadequate to maintain him in the Gentlemen section, and onlyan appeal by Penzance notables saved him from ending his days in the class of mad paupers.
