About the Author:

Bonnie Shemie was born in Ohio and attended college in Pennsylvania. She came to visit her brother in Montreal in 1972 and decided to stay on to paint, marry, and raise a family. In addition to her books on Native architecture for children, she has designed stained glass windows and architectural ornamentation. Her paintings sell in fine galleries in the Montreal area.

Synopsis:

The native peoples of the North-west Coast were blessed with a mild climate, water teeming with fish, abundant vegetation and a variety of trees. With only small handmade tools these people managed to fell the massive cedars, transport them back to their villages, build spectacular wooden dwellings and embellish them with art admired the world over.
