Gustave Dore (1832-1883) was an artist of outstanding ability who was the greatest illustrator of the 19th century. He was a talented artist who was not only a draughtsman, but also a skilled lithographer, graphic artist, painter and sculptor. He was a very productive and prolific artist who began to paint at the age of six when his talent attracted the attention of art teachers who saw his great promise. He experienced success at the age of 19 by illustrating Paul Lacroix's work, and this led to a deluge of commissions throughout his life. Dore considered his task to be to illustrate all the world's most important literature, and he changed his medium from lithograph to woodcut. One of Dore's most impressive works is "The Illustrated Bible", which is considered by many to be his best achievement. He spent years researching this project by reviewing Egyptian and Mesopotamian collections in the Louvre, reading widely on biblical themes and consulting archaeological collections from the Near East. In many of his biblical scenes, Dore depicted Old Testament figures in oriental dress surrounded by elaborate draperies which gave great vibrancy to the works. "The Illustrated Bible" was a great success in which the first edition sold 3000 copies each month and ten more editions were subsequently printed. When it was published in English, it sold well there, as well as to all its colonies and to America. This book incorporates the artists' illustrations for "The Bible", "Don Quixote", "Gargantua and Pantagruel" by Rabelais, "Baron Munchausen" by Raspe, "Tales" by Perrault and "Fables" by La Fontaine.
