Around the year 435 'just before the time of Saint Benedict 'a middle-aged man named Romanus felt drawn to the solitary life. Leaving his family, he entered the dense forests of the rugged Jura Mountains in eastern France. There he was soon joined by his brother Lupicinus and, many years later, by a disciple Eugendus, all three of whom are still revered in the local area.

This first English translation of the Life of these Jura Fathers supplies a chapter long missing in anglophone monastic history and conveys significant information on early Christian Gal, its Church, and the implantation of monasticism.

Book Description Paper Back. Condition: New. These newly-translated texts tell us about a time (ca. 435) and a place (the Jura Mountains in eastern France) far off the beaten path of most of what we know of early monasticism. Fifty years before the birth of St. Benedict, we have evidence of a Western monastic life and rule that mentions early Egyptian sources, the rule of St. Basil, the writings of John Cassian, and the influence of the Fathers at Lerins, one of the earliest monastic communities in France. Attached as an appendix is a winsome letter dating to 412 A.D. by a certain Eucherius, bishop of Lyon, entitled ''In Praise of the Desert.'' 240 pp. Seller Inventory # 234235
