" important for anyone who is concerned with inter-religious dialogue and the meaning of visionary mysticism."
--"The Reader's Review"
This first complete English translation of two works by Zen scholar D.T. Suzuki introduces Emanuel Swedenborg and compares Swedenborgian thought to Buddhism. The first work stresses Swedenborg's message that true spirituality demands an engagement in this world; the second compares Swedenborg's description of heaven to the paradise of Pure Land Buddhism."

From the Publisher:
from The Reader's Review
When D.T. Suzuki returned home after more than a decade in America, working for Open Court Publishing House, he brought with him a unique understanding of contemporary American religious culture. The religious teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, the great 18th century scientific savant and visionary mystic, were in a vogue in turn of century America. Suzuki was taken by how much of his teaching carried on a strong family resemblance with Mahayana Buddhism. In Japan at this time there was a debate about the religious value of the traditional religions, given the scientific and technological innovations of Western knowledge. Suzuki wrote this essay about how the scientific were united in this European to encourage Japanese to value their own traditional religions. Suzuki also translated several of Swedenborg's popular works into Japanese. This translation of Suzuki's essay into English is accompanied by a historic essay about the work in Japanese culture and Suzuki's later relationship with Swedenborgianism. The volume is important for anyone who is concerned with interreligious dialogue and the meaning of the visionary mysiticsm of Swedenborg.
