Selected collection of b/w works, including hitherto unpublished photos taken in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, in 1875, of German-American government photographer John Karl Hillers (1843 - 1925). After a career of soldiering, he met John Wesley Powell and hired on as a boatman for the 2nd Powell expedition down the Colorado River in 1871. Hillers became Powell's chief expedition photographer on the trip down the Grand Canyon the next year, and spent his next 20 years exploring and photographing the American West as photographer of Powell's Bureau of Ethnology, Powell's US Geological Survey, and the Bureau of American Ethnology.
