Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921) has been described as Europe's most influential student of the Middle East. He was born in Hungary into an Orthodox Jewish family. He was honored by universities and academies in many countries for his contribution to oriental studies and was hailed as a founder of the scholarship of Islam.
