Biohydrometallurgy is an emerging technology. It is used industrially for the recovery of copper and uranium from low-grade resources, and the liberation of gold and other precious metals from refractory ores. Technologies are also being developed and applied to coal desulfurization, bioremediation of contaminated soils, and effluent solutions and bioenhanced tertiary oil recovery processes. This collection of papers from the International Biohydrometallurgy Symposium held in Wyoming, USA in August 1993 is a two-volume study which focuses on recent advances achieved in the fundamental and applied aspects of research and development applied to mineral domains. "Volume I" is concerned with subjects related to laboratory and industrial scale bioleaching of base and precious metals, biocorrosion phenomena, diverse bioreduction processes and electrochemical reactions. The papers included in "Volume II" focus on various laboratory and industrial scale processes dealing with the areas of biosorption, bioremediation, bioenhanced oil recovery, physiology, microbiology and molecular biology of microorganisms involved in diverse mineral technologies.
