Synopsis
Recent successes in developing new and novel materials with unusual combinations of microstructure and properties have been based upon the ability to develop their desired characteristics by exercising engineered microstructural design prior to, and intelligent control during, processing. These proceedings, from a symposium held during Materials Week '92 in Chicago, Illinois, focus on the fundamental understanding of the evolution of microstructure during processing. Seventeen papers provide details on topics of interest that include: Phase selection at high undercoolings, interfacial morphology during directional solidification, synthesis in the semi-solid state, and rapid solidification.
