Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag noch einmal mit Klarsichtfolie eingeschlagen, Klarsichtfolie etwas verschmutzt und zerkratzt, eigentlicher Schutzumschlag minimal bestoßen, farbiger Kopfschnitt (blau) weist kleine Kratzer auf, Bleistifteintrag auf Schmutztitel / dust jacket wrapped in clear film, clear film somewhat soiled and scratched, actual dust jacket minimally scuffed, colored top edge (blue) has small scratches, pencil entry on half title. - Francis Cottington (1579-1652) raised himself from an obscure Somerset family of clothier-landholders to a position of national prominence and wealth through talent, hard work and long apprenticeship in successively more responsible diplomatic and administrative posts at home and abroad. He served the early Stuart monarchs in Spain and in Parliament, miraculously recovered from a confrontation with Buckingham, and became a privy councillor and Chancellor of the Exchequer during the so-called "eleven years tyranny" of Charles I from 1629 to 1640. Cottington worked closely, if not always harmoniously, with Laud and Strafford in helping to shape royal policy, shared in the recrimination which the critics of the Crown heaped upon the royal counsellors, and was driven from his offices by the Long Parliament on the eve of the Civil War. Thereafter, unable to remain aloof from the struggle which soon touched him personally, Cottington helped to mastermind the Royalist war effort until he fled to France in 1646 to escape retribution at the hands of the Parliamentarians. There and in the Low Countries he followed Prince Charles s court-in-exile and forwarded the Royalist counter-revolution, while the Parliamentarians took from him the considerable property and wealth that he had had to leave behind in England. He died in Spain in the very city where he had launched his career as a royal servant nearly a half-century earlier. From this day to ours Cottington has been dogged by a reputation for guile, self-interest and administrative irresponsibility, as well as for being blindly pro-Spanish, crypto-Catholic, and a damaging influence upon the nation. This first study of Cottington traces his long career and re-examines the standard interpretation of him. / CONTENTS List of Illustrations Introduction by A. L.
