Classical Xing Yi appears to have few 'forms' to learn. These include the Five Fists (Wu Xing) and the later Twelve Animals forms (Shi Er Xing). Underpinning these forms are specialised Xing Yi Nei Gong practices that integrate structural, functional and energetic pathways in to the 'whole body power' that is at the heart of Xing Yi Chuan.

This book very nearly stands alone in its originality as a contribution from a most senior master (and his students) of a traditional school of internal pugilism. This unique position is shared by few others, perhaps only Sun Lu Tang and Wang Zi Ping, due to the fact that few boxers attain such high level skills and knowledge in both martial arts and traditional Chinese medicine, as well as possessing the literary skill of writing, each of which requires years of study. Furthermore, acquiring expertise in these varied skills while trying to survive the tumultuous historical period of the last century in China was a monumental achievement in and of itself. The fact that we only now have it all consolidated in book form is a notion that requires more than a passing thought to appreciate.

Tim Cartmell is a martial artist best known as n author and translator of martial arts books. He is an Eighth Degree Black Belt (Master) in Kung-Fu San Soo, and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He placed first at the 2003 IBJJF Pan Championship as a brown belt (Senior 2), and first at the 2004 IBJJF Pan Championship as a black belt (Senior 2).
