This book provides an intensive Swahili (Kiswahili) course for first year students in colleges and universities which, with a few modifications, would also be useful in high schools. The selection of material, the order in which it is presented, and the suggestions for the instructor were worked out during six years of teaching at Columbia University, New York University, and the City College of the City University of New York.

Kiswahili kwa Kitendo contains forty units, followed by twelve supplementary readings. The units use simple,familiar situations to illustrate the linguistic patterns and features that are essential for an early grasp of the Swahili language. The rules are mainly contained within the actual content of the lesson without going into much grammatical detail. A quiz is provided after every few lessons so that the students may measure their competence and achievement. The answers to these quizzes are placed in the appendix. The second part of the book provides twelve simple passages of Swahili prose, each followed by a set of exercises. These readings make use of the grammatical rules that have been learned in the lessons and add to the accumulated vocabulary.
