Wilson John Haire entered the Belfast shipyard as an office boy at fourteen. Brought up mainly in rural areas, he was suddenly thrown into the world's biggest shipyard, a huge cauldron of twisted metal, great baulks of timber, the freezing sea, death and terrible injuries, where the day-to-day philosophy was fatalism.
He writes also of the rural world he continued to live in while working at the yard, and of its cruelty towards human beings and animals. But despite the hardship and conflict that are evoked, there is laughter and joyfulness, and people's spirits are lifted in the most unexpected circumstances. He leaves the shipyard at 21 to become a bouncer, and experiences the contrast between life in the yard and the make-believe world of the ballroom, while at the same time encountering the first terrible pain of relected love.

Product Description:
[Described as `An evocative work of autobiographical fiction in six acts, taking place over twenty years, (The Yard) is a book of true originality and deep feeling'. The author was raised in rural Ulster, but worked at Belfast's Harland and Wolff shipyard from the age of 14 until he was 21 during the late 1940s, early 1950s].
Review:
A true eye-opener for younger, cossetted generations...sure to trigger bitter-sweet memories for older readers. A well-crafted, clever and gripping account. -- News Letter (Belfast)

He writes very, very well. He’s got a way of bringing alive a whole range of characters. I would recommend this. -- Rattlebag, RTE Radio One

His mordant, humorous account of Belfast life smacks of Dickens...snappy and evocative style -- Camden New Journal

The style is of gritty realism – writing with no room for sentiment, but which contains a bleak beauty all its own... compelling. -- Belfast Telegraph
