Review:
How do you tell the difference between toad spawn and frogspawn? What do bream eat? If you've ever wondered what exactly goes on in and around rivers and ponds, this book is for you. Beginning with a seasonal romp through a typical pond, author Steve Barker reveals when various plants bloom, how snails breed and what becomes of aquatic creatures under ice. He then opens your eyes to a startling world of fish, waterfowl and water birds, plus waterside mammals like mink, shrews and otters. See how trout develop, observe bittern, heron and kingfisher skulls, and get a close-up view of a beaver's scaly tail. Learn how amphibians, reptiles, plants, insects and other pond creatures live and breed in fresh water habitats. A fine introduction to a fascinating ecosystem.
