Dublin city is blessed in its location, between the splendid Dublin/Wicklow mountains and the beautiful Dublin bay, and in this setting the hinterland of the city has grown over the centuries into a rich heritage of inner and outer suburbs as important as the city centre itself. In this book, Pearson tells of the geographical, economic and social history of this area, its famous inhabitants, its agricultural development, methods of transport, sport and recreational aspects, but most of all he details the architectural heritage of the county which is studded with riches from many different eras, and with the most desirable homes in the country.

Illustrated with over 700 photographs, old prints, maps, etchings.

About the Author:

Peter Pearson is an historian, conservationist and noted artist with a lifelong commitment to the protection and enhancement of Ireland's architectural heritage. He has attended demolitions of many great houses, rescuing their decorative period features, in the process amassing a vast body of knowledge on the crafts, social and economic history of places throughout Ireland. He has written and contributed to many books and publications. He initiated the Drimnagh Castle Restoration Project and has worked with An Taisce and the Irish Georgian Society and is a founder member of the Dublin Civic Trust, a member of the Heritage Council and an honorary life member of the Dun Laoghaire Historical Society.

Born in 1955, Peter was educated at Kingstown School and Trinity College Dublin. Peter now lives with his wife and two sons in County Wexford. He has written the bestselling Between the Mountains and the Sea, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County, which details the architectural heritage of the county, and The Heart of Dublin, published in 2000, which charts the origins and planning of Dublin's streetscapes from early times to the present day. His latest book, Decorative Dublin is a beautifully illustrated account of the many decorative elements to be found on Dublin's streets and in its buildings.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Vance, Robert (illustrator). 3rd Edition. 416 pages. Illustrations, Maps. Original publisher's cloth, spine lettered gilt, with unclipped dust jacket. This is the third, revised, expanded and most complete edition, published in association with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. With photographs from the author's collection and specially-commissioned photographs by Robert Vance and Anthony Woods. *** In 1846 this area was described as '.a maritime barony, It contains the beautiful and brilliant sweep of coast from Blackrock round by Dalkey and Killiney, to Bray. the other parts of the barony consist, in a general view, of rich champaign ground, and are very profusely powdered with mansions and villas and embellished with wood, shrubbery, lawn and garden.' It is still a county full of variety, including Ireland's finest artificial harbour at Dun Laoghaire and the first railway, many ancient castles - Dalkey, Shankill, Dundrum; Victorian squares and terraces and even prehistoric remains such as cromlechs. The history of the county is very closely bound up with the story of Dublin city. Many of the inhabitants of the houses described were successful merchants, noted artist or were successful merchants, noted artist or were involved in the politics of the day - people like Lord Edward FitzGerald, Robert Emmet, Lord Fitzgibbon; writers such as George Bernard Shaw and Samuel Beckett and artists like William Orpen. Fortunes were generated in Dublin and abroad in coal, shipping, wine, spirits, tanning and leather and even buttons and pins, and many of the entrepreneurs lived in fine houses in the county. The dramatic landscape of the area incorporates part of the Dublin mountains to the west rolling down to the Irish Sea. The coastal area stretches from Merrion Strand at Booterstown to the town of Bray. The hinterland contains the traditional villages and townlands of Leopardstown, Kilternan and Stepaside. Much has been lost, bulldozed for new development and much more is under threat. However in recent years people have put a value on old buildings, cottages, humble stone structures, ironwork, street furniture and of course fine villas, castles and place of great historical and architectural importance. Peter Pearson has visited almost every place mentioned in this book. For years he has fought against unnecessary demolition - lecturing, writing, lobbying and recording the vistas and buildings in his elegant paintings. This book is an invaluable record of a great and important area of Ireland.* A near fine copy without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings. ***WEIGHT OVER 1.2 KG.
