She has written three successful novels for young adults: COULD THIS BE LOVE, I WONDERED? (selected for the International Youth Library's White Ravens award), COULD I LOVE A STRANGER? (1995) and CALL YOURSELF A FRIEND (1996), all published by O'Brien Press. She is also a contributor to several collections of short stories for teenage readers.
Her latest book, FARAWAY HOME, for 10/11 to 14/15-year-olds, is set in Vienna, Dublin and Northern Ireland. It tells the true story, based on the author's own research, of young Jewish refugees from the Nazi terror, who find a haven on a farm in Millisle, County Down during the Second World War. Published in Ireland in November 1999 by the O'Brien Press, it is available in Britain from March 2000 (distributed by Kingfisher).
Throughout Ireland, North and South, Marilyn Taylor has given numerous talks on books and reading, and workshops on creative writing, to pupils, teachers and librarians, and has addressed the Irish Association of Teachers of English, in Dublin, and the annual conference of the UK Association of Advisers in English. She has appeared at the Listowel Writers' Week, Baboro, Galway and the Aspects Festival of Irish Writing in Bangor, County Down. She participated in Books Across the Border; a series of cross-border and cross-community children's book events organized jointly by Dundalk and Newry libraries. She also addressed 600 children at the Reading Celebration Day at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
Marilyn Taylor participated in the Pushkin Prizes 1998 & 1999, and has been a member of the judging panel of the McDonald's Young Writers Competition, and of several writing competitions organized by public libraries. A founder member of Children's Books Ireland, the prime body in Ireland involved in children's literature; she is on the Irish Arts Council recommended list of Writers in Schools.
