George Canning's "Letter-Journal" describes the first parliamentary experiences of one of the major figures in British politics in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Of particular importance are the descriptions of the working practices of, and his relationships with, the Younger Pitt and other senior members of the government and opposition; the early careers of contemporaries later to be highly influential in British politics such as Lord Liverpool, Prime Minister 1812-1827; and Canning's initial contributions to debate in the House. The journal also illuminates the social aspects of politics in London during the parliamentary sessions. Canning records a hectic round of dinners, suppers, "at homes", masquerades, balls and visits to Drury Lane and Covent Garden.
