Patty O'Higgins is a young woman suffering from lupus, a disease surrounded by ancient prejudice and fear because of one of its occassional side effects, a wolf-like distortion of the face. Mirroring her illness are strange events in her home community in the west of Ireland - hatred and anger prowl the mountains, friend turns against firend and everywhere is the sense of an overpowering malevolence.
