"In his work which is commonly known as the Censura, Martin Bucer made a study of the first English Prayer Book of 1549. This is an important document to students of the Prayer Book for the light which its sheds on the second Prayer Book of 1552, but it has been inaccessible to most students since it has not appeared in print, either in Latin or English, since it was first printed in Basle in 1577. Moreover, the printed text of 1577 faces the student with some difficulties since it was plainly made from a poor manuscript. This new edition presents a Latin text based on Bucer's autograph manuscript, which is preserved at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and on the fair copy made by his amanuensis, preserved at the Bodleian; and an English translation is provided. Martin Bucer's influence on the Prayer Book of 1552 is possibly not as direct as was once supposed. The influence of his treatise De Legitima Ordinatione on the Ordinal of 1551 has also been disputed. This book provides a translation of the ordination rite in Bucer's treatise and quotes evidence to show that it is prior to the English Ordinal of 1551 and not derived from it."
