Male impotence is said to be the most common sexual problem in the Western world. Very little research has so far been published on this phenomenon, and that which exists is largely confined to a few specialist books and journals, and to impressionistic accounts in the popular press. By its very nature, it is a difficult area to study. Respondents can sometimes be found through advertisements or through the agency of sex therapy clinics, but even in this age of sexual openness, few men wish to broadcast their difficulties. Current approaches to the problem have concentrated on biochemical and psychological interpretations, both for explanatory and therapeutic purposes. Valuable as these are, they tend to minimize or even overlook the social context in which impotence is expressed. Some sociological evaluation is, therefore, required to extend - and perhaps even to correct - our understanding of the condition. Based on specific case studies and extensive research material, this study is devoted to questions of role formation and uncertainty. The author argues that, in sexual matters, it may not be ignorance but 'knowledge' which produces fear. He suggests that the mechanization of sex and the insistent emphasis on sexual athleticism may be responsible for patterns of physical expectation which undermine the confidence of the male sexual authority. This study offers a sympathetic and deep insight into the problems of impotency. It extends the scope of enquiry, complementing and, where necessary, contesting the traditional explanations of impotence as a source of personal anxiety and social concern.
