International Waters was a John Hansard Gallery offsite project by Roger Palmer which remembered sea-trading ties between Southampton and Cape Town. The project investigated the colonial history of the Union-Castle shipping line and was housed within their former headquarters. The exhibition combined large-scale wall texts, such as ship names, with items selected by the artist relating to the history of the shipping line. International Waters, documents four projects in which the sea is considered in its role in emigration and exploration, colonisation and commerce. Reference is made to long-distance sea travel from Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries and the subsequent maintenance of links between Britain and two of its distant colonies.
