Synopsis:
In 1852, the Great Northern opening an important section of its main line between London and Doncaster, crossed the Midland's Nottingham-Lincoln line on the level just north of Newark. The resultant 'flat' crossing became one of the most emotive symbols of the intense rivalry between Britain's fiercely independent railway companies. The effect of the Midland and Great Northern railways and their successors on the economy of a small Midlands market town, including its surrounding area, is at the heart of this book. Presented in A5 format, this book consists of 256 pages, with 200 illustrations. It is casebound with a gold-blocked spine and a laminated colour dust jacket and colour endpapers.
