Synopsis:
Presenting well-known and foundational essays on Lord Byron's dramas alongside writings that are recent or difficult to obtain, this work brings together some of the best 20th-century essays on this topic. As the century has progressed, so attention to Byron's plays has increased, partly as a consequence of renewed study and evaluation of Romantic and Gothic drama generally. The book aims to serve not only as a critical tool in relation to Byron studies, but also as an illustration of the momentum and varied directions of criticism itself over the last 50 years. In selecting the essays, the editors set out to present the best and most provocative what has been thought and written about Byron as a dramatist, eschewing attempts to represent or balance different critical approaches or to pursue a particular critical agenda.
