Commencing with an analysis of many of the problems raised by computers in schools, the text poses the fundamental question: how much do we need to know about the technology and to what extent can we rely on the "black box" approach? It identifies the emerging pedagogical issues and their implications for the training needs of teachers and shows how advanced artificial intelligence research can be brought to the classroom. A final chapter in this overview of emerging issues in schools information technology returns to the theme of teacher education. The book also looks at the issues of change from a series of national perspectives, examining the strategies of change and innovation which are pointing the way ahead, whilst a third and final section of the work focuses more closely upon classroom experience.

The latter describes the work carried out in the learning and teaching of history, showing how the most advanced ideas can be translated into classroom practice, and how they can provide a rich source of material for the reader. There is a chapter from a young American author, Joy Hanna, written when she was a high school student, which illustrates the possibilities which can be opened up for the intelligent reader by new technologies.
