Synopsis
The legend of Joan of Arc - the simple shepherd girl relieving the siege of Orleans and crowning the Dauphin king at Reims - is well known. Less well known are the details of her trial in 1431, at which, although she conducted herself with extraordinary dignity and intelligence, she was condemned to death by the ecclesiastical and political establishment in a legal process distorted by the bitter civil conflicts of the Hundred Years War. The record of her trial makes clear that her insistence on cross-dressing - a threat to the establishment which counted for more than her military achievements - was a prime cause of her sentence. Includes a transcript of the trial with a penetrating examination of the reasons for her condemnation and the role Joan of Arc has played in the Christian imagination.
