The struggle for place and identity on the Western frontier.
As the author of historical books set in the West, I greatly admire the nobility of spirit that characterized the women who went west in the late 1800s, and try to depict their reality in my novels. Last Chance’s Mattie Hamil faces a predicament that is as old as the West itself--she is unmarried and pregnant. I contrast this dilemma as faced by level-headed Mattie, who loves and is loved by her baby’s roving father, with that of the impulsive young vagabond, Cindy, a rape victim who has never known love, even from her family. The plot revolves around the circumstances that bring them together, the similarities in their anguish, and the differences in and consequences of their decisions. Last Chance, nominated for Western Writers of America’s Best First Novel award, is for both men and women who enjoy reading about the early West as it really was. The growing town of Last Chance Gulch, just renamed Helena and capital of the territory of Montana, gives the women, and the men in their lives, the chance to play a part in the town’s development as well as their own.
