Israel Putnam commanded the Continental army's defences in the Hudson Highlands, the cinch-point of the Hudson Valley, New York that held the British Army in New York City in 1777. This was the year when Burgoyne's army advanced south from Canada to cut the northern colonies asunder, and the Hudson Highland defences were vital to the patriot's cause. The Orderly Book has entries from 1 June, 1777 to 13 November 17777 covering the period of movement of British forces in the valley.
