This work explores today's loss of employee loyalty and posits that this loss is rooted in a major change in American social character, a change that has overturned an older tradition dating from the 1880s. Evidence is found in a historical review of public opinion-poll data and in the author's research, which reveal a sharp distinction in attitudes by age cohort, implying that a shift in social character has occurred. The work concludes with an exploration of the possible economic and social consequences of the loss of loyalty and the new social character emerging in America.

From the Author:
Loyalty-lost attributed to a change in social character
This work explores today’s loss of employee loyalty and posits that this loss is rooted in a major change in American social character, a change which has overturned an older tradition dating from the 1880s. Evidence is found in an historical review of public opinion poll data and in the author’s research, which reveal a sharp distinction in attitudes by age cohort, implying that a shift in social character has occurred. Those born before 1941 were representative of an older social character, one conducive to organizational loyalty. Those born between 1941 and 1955 had the greatest loss of loyalty and were also the most emotionally scarred by the experience of layoffs. The youngest cohort was relatively unconcerned by downsizings, and adopted an individualistic attitude toward the workplace. The work concludes with an exploration of the possible economic and social consequences of the loss of loyalty and the new social character emerging in America.
